While the two conditions share some similarities, they have different causes. Wernicke-Korkasoff syndrome is caused by a thiamine (Vitamin B1) deficiency, though heavy alcohol use can be an underlying cause of this deficiency. Staying Healthy
People who consume four to five standard drinks per day over decades can develop fatty liver disease. Not everybody who consumes excessive amounts of alcohol for long periods of time develops dementia. But there is no way to predict whether a person who consumes large amounts of alcohol will develop alcoholic dementia or not. Finally, we would like to emphasise that our model is predictive but not causal.

This number could be even higher, as many people do not receive a diagnosis until they develop advanced symptoms.
